New Saints star holds Premier dream

Thursday, February 25, 2010, 06:30

SCUNTHORPE Saints team boss Malcolm Vasey has revealed that latest signing, Steven Worrall, is eager to race in the Premier League in the future, despite this only being his debut season in the sport.

The former Moto-X rider will fill one of the reserve berths for the National League side, after impressing during a practice on the club's mini-track.

After progressing through the amateur meetings, the 18-year-old has now been promoted to the young Saints line-up, which is two short of completion for the new season.

But Vasey believes he has a star in the making in Worrall.

"Like so many Moto-X riders he is comfortable when tracks are a little tricky and his determination and approach have impressed me greatly," said Vasey.

"He has good family support, has acquired good equipment and looks after his fitness.

"All of this points to a high level of commitment and I am very pleased that he is coming to Scunthorpe.

"He is really keen to do well for Scunthorpe and sees it very much as being here for the long haul and hopes to eventually ride for the Premier League Scorpions.

"However, he only rode a speedway bike for the first time last year and is sensible enough to realise that he has a lot to learn in speedway."

After announcing the signing of Worrall, Vasey was confident of securing another new face to join the ranks at the Eddie Wright Raceway, with discussions ongoing in a bid to complete the top five of his team.

"We now have one place in the team and one squad place to fill and discussions are well advanced with a rider to complete the top five," added Vasey.

"I expect to be able to reveal his name shortly and I am sure that everyone in our squad next season can improve which is what the National Development League is about for us.

"I am very pleased with all of our riders and their approach and I am sure we will have a great team spirit."

Worrall will ride with his new team-mates, in competitive action, for the first time when they journey to King's Lynn on April 2, with his home debut in Saints kevlars three days later, on Easter Monday.

Should the Scorpions have stuck with Byron Bekker rather than reshuffle their line-up?
