Men clinch photo finish

NINETY-seven shots all, two of the five rinks having completed their games, the other three all playing the last end – it does not come much more exciting than that.

And that was the scenario in the recent county men's fours match at the Carlton Street Bowls Centre when the hosts played against Long Sutton.

The outcome was good news for the Scunthorpe team as each of the remaining rinks picked up one shot, to give the home team a three-shot victory.

However, with only two winning rinks Scunthorpe had to settle for just 12 of the 18 points, a result which still keeps their promotion hopes very much alive.

The most successful rink of A Rhodes, C Brunton, S Burton and P Johnson recovered from 5-0 down early on to win by 10 shots.

But it was the other winning foursome of D Chambers, D Saxby, D Leeson and J Davidson that stole the limelight as they came back from 16-6 at halfway to register a 23-18 victory.

Although the other three rinks lost, they did between them over the last three ends score 16 shots whilst conceding only three, thus making a valuable contribution to the final aggregate win.
