No bowing to Queen as Bess beaten

Thursday, March 11, 2010, 06:30

PEPPERELLS booked their place in the final of the Challenge Cup for the third time in four seasons with a 7-1 win over Queen Bess.

"I expected it to be 2-1, or 3-1, not the score that it was, it was a total surprise," said boss Vim Singh.

"Queen Bess are a good side, but we were really at our best."

Chris Wood gave Pepperells the lead in the 12th minute, before Jack Muldoon and Kirk Shrimpton gave them a 3-0 half-time advantage.

After the break, Bess got on the scoresheet, but it proved only a temporary setback.

Muldoon's second of the game restored Pepperells' three-goal cushion and Wayne Graves also weighed in with a double before substitute Mark Anderson wrapped up the scoring late on.

They now face Beacon in the final at Glanford Park.

The two finalists for the Bob Bedford Cup were also decided after Gunness stormed to a 6-0 victory over Broughton Town Reserves.

They will face EJ Galaxy in the showpiece match, after they beat Lincoln Castle, 3-0.

A Christian Quibell brace, and Adam Quickenden's goal, were enough to see off Castle.

In a much tighter cup semi-final, Chaplin's edged out AFC Mallard, 4-3, to ensure safe passage to the Geg McGowan Cup final.

Division one title hopefuls Broughton Town missed out on the chance to go top after a surprise 3-0 loss to White Hart.

That coincided with third-placed Auld South Yorkshire beating bottom side Bottesford Town 8-0, a result which moved them within a point of Broughton in second place.

Priory Cobras continue to keep the rest at arms length in division two, with a 3-1 win over Howden's Lodge preserving their six-point lead.

Baysgarth Old Boys maintained their hopes of the title with a 12-1 victory against Ferry Road.

In the third tier, Fender Talbot's 9-2 win over Crowle Keys means their dreams of the title live on, as they sit seven points behind leaders Lincoln Castle, with three games in hand.

In a battle at the bottom, Danny Barnes gave Trinity a 15th minute lead against DSV.

But when the latter equalised five minutes later, both sides went in search of a winner.

But it was Michael Fowles who broke DSV hearts, latching on to a through ball to score with two minutes remaining.

In division four, Ashby Star inflicted Ferry Road Club Reserves' first league loss of the campaign, beating them 4-1. That allowed Barton Broncos to close the gap, following a 3-1 win over Valley View.

Bottom of division five Priory Cobras Reserves lost 2-1 to fellow strugglers Appleby Wanderers.

Blyborough, DNC Electrical and Barnetby Reserves all secured three points in division six, while in the seventh tier, first beat third as Second Byte RAOB overcame New Holland Villa, 5-4.

Second place Desert Rat kept pace with a 4-1 win over Wicked Bar.
