United still looking at former Mariner North

Tuesday, March 09, 2010, 06:30

SCUNTHORPE United remain in talks with Danny North about a short-term deal for the striker.

The 22-year-old front man has been training with the Iron for three weeks after leaving League Two strugglers Grimsby Town.

North went with the Iron to Leicestershire health resort Champneys Springs last week and sources close to the player suggest he is hopeful of being offered a deal by United, if only until the end of the campaign.

He will though be hoping a minor hamstring problem doesn't put paid to his aspirations of further impressing United manager Nigel Adkins.

Picked up in training, it is sufficient to rule North out of the reserves' Totesport.com Cup trip to Leicester City this afternoon.

It is a match that is expected to attract nationwide interest given that it will be refereed by Premier League official Mark Halsey – his first game back after beating cancer.

The Bolton official has undergone numerous chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatments since being diagnosed with cancer of the lymph noads in August but was told by doctors he had beaten the disease in December.

Since the turn of the New Year he has been improving his fitness and the Iron's trip to face the Foxes at Histon will be his first game in six months.

"It will be a fairytale return, Roy of the Rovers stuff," said the 48-year-old when talking about his return.
