Mixed fours bowls team get promotion boost
They defeated Grantham by 158 shots to 68, winning all five rinks – thus securing the maximum 18 points.
Leading by 53 shots at halfway, thanks in no small measure to Graham Teal's rink being 24-1 up, Scunthorpe continued to outscore their opponents, adding a further 73 shots, while conceding only 36 over the remainder of the game.
Teal's quartet took the best rink prize, winning 35-9 (and the opposition's score included a six), but only just as the rinks of Pat Wescott and Phil Boulton also won by 20-plus shots.
By contrast, the ladies' Trudy Bates team scored just four points at Dunholme, although with a shot deficit of only three at the end, the result could easily have gone the other way. Scunthorpe had lead by two with three ends left, but they could not hold on.
They were well behind at halfway, but two rinks dramatically transformed the situation – the rink skipped by Greta Deboer went from 7-9 down to 24-9 up, while Sylvia Whitehand's quartet went from 5-7 to 22-9.
