Jacklin named as Open ambassador

Saturday, February 06, 2010, 06:30

SCUNTHORPE-born golfing legend Tony Jacklin has been named Official Hospitality Ambassador for the Open Championship.

Jacklin is synonymous with the competition after his 1969 triumph, which ended a 50-year spell without a British winner.

As part of his duties, the 65-year-old will take questions from fans on each day of the Championship, as part of the 150th anniversary of the event.

He will also pose for pictures with those who have bought packages for the event, as well as being the guest speaker at the sportsman's dinner, the night before the golf gets underway on July 15.

"The Open is extremely special for me," said Jacklin.

"I am delighted to be the Official Hospitality Ambassador at the Open Championship in this historic year."

Meanwhile, at Elsham, one of the clubs where Jacklin starred as a boy, 39 seniors produced some excellent scores for the fifth monthly stableford competition on winter greens.

Graham Evison proved he has a game for all seasons, winning the event with 42 points.

Runner-up was Peter Beel (40 points), while five players registered 39 points. But third, on a count back, was Steve Pearce.

Polly Brettle and Robert Taylor triumphed in the winter mixed competition, a greensome stableford.

Forty-four points was enough to seal victory, beating Colin and Joan Mee into second on a count back.

At Normanby Hall, 15 ladies played a nine-hole special, with Joan Woodcock top, on 21 points.

Sue Brown was second with 19 points, while Viv Coult (17 points) came third.

Stan Winspear, Pete Vardy, Len Codd and Bernie Andrews won the Drawn Am-Am.

Attracting 40 seniors, the 16-hole competition saw the winning quartet end up well ahead of the chasing pack, with their 82 points enough to beat second placed Josh Southward, Richard Carton and Bernard Wilson (73 points).
