Angie finishes six points clear to win bronze medal

ELSHAM ladies had a busy February despite the rain and snow, playing two stablefords and a better-ball competition.

The first stableford was won on 34 points by Jenny Hedley, who pipped Ruth Rutter on a count back in the silver division.

The bronze section was won by Angie Powell with 38 points – six clear of Shirley Whitehand and Sue Hargreaves. Tilly Long won the 30-36 group with 27 points.

Jane Evans was a clear winner of the second stableford, again with 34 points, but this time four ahead of second-placed Sandy Richards and Sally Leaning.

Shirley Farley won the bronze section with 28 points from Barbara Barton on 25.

Honours in the 30-36 section went to Jean Westbook with 24 points.

The better-ball competition produced a decisive victory for Sheila Millns and Pauline Rae on 44 points – five ahead of Gill Leaning and Marion Gibbs.

Third, also on 39, were Shirley Whitehand and Shirley Farley.

A singles clash between the lady captain's team and the lady vice-captain's team produced a narrow 6-5 success for the former, with two matches halved.

Tomorrow the ladies take on Immingham in round two of the Mail on Sunday competition.

The team is: Judith Ainsworth, Jenny Burt, Sally Leaning, Janet Westray and Janet Godfrey.

The seniors played the sixth and final winter stableford for the Bob Chapman Trophy.

Winner on the day was Alan Speight with 45 points from Barry Richardson (40) and Alan Kaye (39).

But winner of the trophy with an aggregate 124 points was Graham Evison from Barry Richardson and Alan Speight who both finished on 120.
