Ice causing problems for anglers
BLYTON PONDS: Anglers venturing out have been rewarded with catches of roach, bream and chub on D pond to chopped worm. Carp in the 5lb to 7lb class in both A and B ponds have surprised everyone by taking pellets and luncheon meat only six inches below the surface – in this weather they would normally be down in the depths.
Angela reminds all anglers that she needs the names of those who will be attending the March 7 Spring match (where all get something) now. Ring 01427 628240.
GRANGE PARK, MESSINGHAM: Anglers turning up have expected the worst, but were surprised to obtain reasonable weights despite having to fish in such conditions. Mark Lidgard has figured well in both the week's matches with his pellet and groundbait attack, but on Saturday lost out to Nigel Lowry's carp catching corn.
KEADBY CANAL: The Basin has been the only area to produce some silver fish off the boat moorings. And of course the ever-present pike have been near by, one of 20 pounds has been caught. Elsewhere, during rare ice free periods, the odd pike has shown.
KEADBY DRAINS: Frost affected right now, but last week saw a 20-pound pike caught to dead-bait, along with plenty of double-figure fish at Pilfrey Bridge.
KINGFISHER LODGE, HIBALDSTOW: Fished well during the week when free of ice as carp to double-figures took small boils from the deeper water. But the biggest, a common of 22lb 2oz, took bread. Good nets of skimmers have also fed well, along with the roach to maggots. The perch to 2.5lb continue to sample the worms.
MARSHLANDS, BARTON-UPON-HUMBER: The match on Sunday could not have taken place without the anglers themselves breaking the ice, even then it was a dire affair, with only two weighing in. Like most waters, the on/off freezing weather did the damage to anglers' prospects, and the catches suffered as a result.
MESSINGHAM SANDS: Another week in which poor weather conditions have affected results, especially for those anglers targeting carp. Silverfish catches have remained good, with the Oak Tree pond in excellent form.
Two club matches were moved onto the Oak Tree pond at the weekend due to the poor conditions. Crowle AC in particular had a consistent match, with 14 anglers catching 220lb of skimmers and a winning weight of 19lb. In the other match, one angler landed 360 small skimmers for 41lb fishing maggot over groundbait – this in spite of temperatures hovering around freezing all day.
Surprisingly enough, some carp are being caught amongst the silverfish and small baits are definitely outscoring the normal mouthfuls that the carp anglers are offering.
Merry's Pool fished well at the weekend despite being partially frozen over. Light feeder tactics again with small baits proved successful for carp to 6lb.
The Silverfish Open on the Swan Pond produced plenty of bites for everyone by fishing pole through holes in the ice. Most had double-figures of roach, perch and skimmers.
YADDLETHORPE PONDS: Weather has alternated between ice-over and thaw to confuse the fish, but midweek anglers have had mixed nets of fish, mainly from the Match Pit. One angler had 15lb of carp to luncheon meat, another had tench, carp and silver fish to meat, maggots and casters, including a perch to 2.5lb. The rest of the ponds have been quiet, except for the Cut, where a couple of pike were caught to dead-baits.
